Shoebox Lighting Plans - Get it Right before you buy
Why are photometrics important? They allow you to see your area and how it would look under LED Lighting taking the risk out of buying. We can easily run different options with our lights, and provide you with the proper information and guidance. We're here to save you money with LED. But it's as important to get the lighting right.
What are LED Shoebox Lights?
Shoebox lights provide an effective way to light up a large area with ease. They are pole mounted lights found in parking lots and large outdoor areas. Current traditional styles include Metal Halide and HPS ranging from 400W to 1000W.
LED shoebox lights combine classic design with versatility. These lights are versatile and can fit into existing lighting fixtures. This allows you to upgrade your lighting. They come in a myriad of wattages which range from 50 watts to 480 watts. Energy efficient LED shoebox lights can give off more than 60,000 lumens. They can replace up to 2000 watt HID.

Why choose a MyLEDLightingGuide Shoebox LED Parking Lot Lights?
1. Three Styles of Shoebox Mounting Options available
Straight Pole Arm Mounts
These mounts are usually installed on existing square poles. Straight arm mounts are rigid and do not allow for light adjustment. If installing new LED Shoebox fixtures, make sure the mounting patterns match. They should, but its always worth the extra effort to check.
Slip fitter mounts are very easy to install as they usually slide over standard 2 3/8-inch lighting poles. The biggest advantage of slip fitter mounts is that they give you the ability to angle the light inwards. They have adjustable heads. They enable you to move the heads to the position you desire.
These are versatile mounts and fit at the bottom of the LED shoebox lights. They borrow their design from the mounts that are generally used on flood lights (yoke mounts). They are the go-to mounts for unique applications.
2. Replace 250W, 400W and 1000W Metal Halide
Replace 400W HID
Replace 1000W HID
LED Shoebox Fixtures produce from 7200 lumens to 66,000 lumens. We can easily replace 1000W HID consuming 66% less energy. These lumen packages are more than enough to replace traditional style HPS and Metal Halide models.
We can produce a free photometric evaluation of your outdoor space to show you how well our LED Shoebox lights work, what model is appropriate and what optic provides the best results for you outdoor space.
High Intensity Discharge Lamp to LED Conversion
|Traditional Shoebox Lamp||LED Shoebox - Lumens (100% directional)|
|250 Watt HPS / Metal Halide||10,000-12,000 lumens|
|400 Watt HPS / Metal Halide||15,000-25,000 lumens|
|1000 Watt HPS / Metal Halide||40,000-55,000 lumens|
3. Many Optics Options for Shoebox Lights
LEDs are directional lights. Their light's focussed and with optics lights up the intended location. They have diodes with individual optics and discharge light evenly across surfaces. Optics control the illumination pattern by delivering their designed beam pattern.
Typical parking lot distribution patterns include Types 2, 3, 4 and 5. Types 3 and 5 are the most common. Why one works best for your location? Let us do a free photometric with one of our many shoebox options.
4. High Voltage Shoebox Fixtures - 480V
We offer both standard voltage options of 100V-277V (standard) and high voltage options of 347V-480V (optional).
Our shoebox lights are available with at least a 4kVA surge suppression. This keeps your shoebox investment safe in unsafe weather conditions.
5. 4000K and 5000K Color Temperatures
We offer Shoebox color temperature options in both 4000K and 5000K. 5000K is a perfect replacement for Metal Halide. 4000K is also an option for those states requiring a slightly warmer light. Other color temperatures available upon request.
Both offer a significant improvement over high pressure sodium lights, rated at 2200K.
6. Control Ready and Dimmable
Another great thing about LED shoebox lights is they can dim down. This means you can turn off or dim each fixture in the absence of motion. This does not affect the life of the LEDs, other than it will extend it. And a dimmed light uses less electricity, saving you even more on your lighting bill.
Think about this. Converting Metal Halide to LED, you might switch from 400 Watts to 120W. At night, if the light dims to 10%, that means the LED is now using 12W. That's a reduction of 388 Watts. (actually the HID lamp consumes 455W with the ballast draw, so you're saving 443W per fixture. That's huge!)
Our LED Shoeboxes work with both 3 pin and 7 pin Nema socket enabled controls and smart networks.
7. L70 Light Maintenance - 100,000 hours
Lumen maintenance relates to the lifespan of a light source. LED lights do not burn out like traditional lights. They maintain initial lumens longer. What happens is the light intensity fades gradually, but this usually takes years.
A 70% deterioration in light output is the point at which the human eye notices a decline in the intensity. But, the human eye is only affected when the light intensity of a light source reaches a level of 30%.
Used 12 hours a night, our LED Shoebox fixtures will provide bright, maintenance free lighting for years.
8. High CRI - 70+
One of the specifications you need to pay attention to is CRI (color rendering index). This is a measurement of the quality of light that the fixture is producing. It is a scale between 0 and 100. Sunlight is 100. A general rule is that you need less quantity of light if you have better quality. LED has high CRI making the quality better than most traditional light sources.
One word of caution. High CRI is not required in traditional shoebox outdoor environments (80+ CRI). It is great for retail environments where true color representation is important. We would not recommend a high CRI solution for an outdoor industrial application.
9. Energy savings up to 80%
LED lights offer high-quality light and use fewer watts than traditional HID lighting. What this means is that you will have more intense light but your power bill will decrease. Most of the traditional HID shoebox lights use between 250 and 1000 watts. That does not include the additional 15% energy used for ballast draw.
If we compare this to LEDs, which consume 40 to 300 watts – there is a 40% to 60% reduction in energy. Greater savings when lighting controls are added.
Maintenance costs drops to near zero. Most shoebox lights require a lift to replace or maintain. These jobs are not cheap. Installing a LED fixture that can last 10+ years mean huge maintenance savings.
10. Efficacy (Lumens Per Watt)
Luminous efficacy is the true measure of a bulb’s efficiency. It indicates the lumens produced for every watt of electricity consumed. LEDs are more efficient than traditional bulbs with a higher luminous efficacy. High quality LEDs have awesome efficacy ratings. The standard luminous efficacy is upwards of 130 lumens per watt.
To calculate luminous efficacy, divide the number of lumens the lamp generates by the watts of electricity it consumes. LED light fixtures with a higher luminous efficacy are more efficient than those with a lower luminous efficacy.
We have shoebox fixtures rated between 130 and 170 lumens/watt. We can help you choose the right efficiency.
11. Paybacks can be relatively short with LED Shoebox Lights
Save Money with LED
LED payback = Hours of Use + Reduced Use of Electricity + Rebates
Rebates may be the least important of the three. High hours of use and high cost of electricity will dwarf the benefits of a rebate.
Everyone likes a rebate. We have created many proposals where payback was under 1 year even without rebates. Contact us and we can help walk you through the math.
12. Retrofit your existing shoebox fixtures easily!
Retrofit 250W HID
Retrofit 400W HID
Retrofit 1000W HID
Why are LED Shoebox Lights Superior?
Better Lumen Intensity
The modernization of lighting sources has created a considerable improvement in energy efficiency. Thanks to the innovative technologies in the lighting, products are now efficient. Energy consumption has also gone down.
Let's take a little time to explain how LEDs have better lumen intensity than HID lamps.
LED Shoebox Initial Lumens
The truth of the matter is that all light sources fade over time. What happens is that light intensity diminishes. At some point the light becomes unusable, although the light doesn't stop functioning. When a lighting fixture's installed and turned on, its luminosity is highest at that point. This is called initial lumens.
The term delivered lumens, or absolute lumens, describes luminous flux produced by a light when factoring in optical loss. Traditional lights such as HID lamps, measure the light intensity of the lamps. The optical loss is not included in the calculation. Delivered lumens is important since HID don't deliver the same amount of lumens they produce.
But when it comes to LEDs, the story is different. When LED luminaires are being tested, they factor in optical loss. So, in the case of LEDs, we actually refer to the delivered lumens when we talk about their light intensity.
When comparing the light output of a HID lamp with that of a LED lamp, we need to look at a variety of factors. These include the lights lifespan, the optical loss factor and lumen maintenance.
LED lamps have better light intensity compared to the luminous flux of HID lamps. Measuring the luminous flux of a light source helps us to know its efficiency. This way, we can choose the one with a higher number of delivered lumens – which is always LED.
How many lumens do I need for a parking lot using shoebox lights?
We have found that a range between 15,000 and 25,000 LED lumens to replace 400W HID and 40,00 to 55,000 LED lumens to replace 1000W Metal Halide are the best lumen ranges for shoebox parking lot lights. The real answer lies in performing a lighting plan for your parking area, which we provide for free.
What are the best color temperatures to use for LED Shoebox Lights?
The two most popular color temperatures are 4000K and 5000K. 5000K is a good replacement for Metal Halide Shoebox lights. Many states have rules that only allows for 4000K or lower.
What are the best optics to use in LED Shoebox Lights?
By far, the most popular optics are Type 3 and Type 5. If you're unsure which one is best for you, we can run a free shoebox lighting plan to show you which optic and lumen package works best for you. Keep in mind, choosing the correct optic can make a dramatic difference to the end result of your parking lot. Using Type 5 optics in the middle of a parking lot provides great area distribution. Using Type 3 on the edges of a lot ensures the light ends up in the lot and not the area directly behind the shoebox fixture.
