High Mast Lighting Application Photometric Plan

Highmast 450 150 Degree Optics
Highmast 325 T3

What Is High Mast Lighting?

Lights mounted on top of tall mast poles. The lighting poles are typically 60-120 feet tall. A single lighting pole may have 4 to 12 fixtures high mast lights mounted to it.

Many high mast poles are equipped with a drop lighting structure. This allows the lights to drop to the base in order to perform maintenance.

Illuminating large areas isn't easy and high masts have very powerful lights. Until LED, most high mast lights featured high pressure sodium bulbs. But these lights have high maintenance costs (because of their short lifespans). They consume a lot of electricity and take a long time to warm up and cool down.

This is why LED High Mast Lights were such a welcome change. They completely transformed the way high masts light up large spaces.

Why choose a MyLEDLightingGuide High Mast?

1. 3 Styles of High Mast Lights offered

Traditional DOT Style
Low Profile Slip Fitter
Low Profile Trunnion

We offer 3 styles of high mast lights to suit every need or application.

1. Traditional DOT Style to light up highways, interchanges and storage areas

2. Low Profile slip fit knuckle mount

3. Low Profile trunnion Mount

2. High Output - Replace up to 2000W MH

Replace 1000W HID
Replace 1500W HID
Replace 2000W HID

Light output is incredible.

High output DOT Style High Masts produce from 44,800 lumens to 105,000 lumens. Low Profile High Mast models produce 62,235 to 124,740 lumens.

These lumen packages are more than enough to replace traditional style HPS, Metal Halide and HID fixtures.

We can produce a free photometric evaluation of your outdoor space to show you how well our LED High Mast lights work, what model is appropriate and what optic provides the best results for you outdoor space.

3. Many Optics Options

Type 2,3,4,5
15° to 150°

LEDs are directional lights. Their light's focussed and with optics lights up the intended location. They have diodes with individual optics and discharge light evenly across surfaces. Optics control the illumination pattern by delivering specific beam angles and patterns.

Which optic is right for you? Let us do a free photometric with one of our lights and give you some options. We have the experience lighting up large areas from high poles - let us help you get the proper light levels and distribution.

4. High Voltage High Mast Lighting

100V-277V
277V-480V

We offer both standard voltage options of 100V-277V and high voltage options of 277V-480V. This include Canadian High Voltage standard of 347V.

Our high mast lights also come with 10kVA and 20kVA surge suppression options. This keeps them safe in unsafe weather conditions.

5. 4000K and 5000K Color Temperatures

4000K
5000K

We offer High Mast color temperature options in both 4000K and 5000K. 5000K is a perfect replacement for Metal Halide. 4000K is also an option for those states requiring a slightly warmer light. Other color temperatures available upon request.

Both offer a significant improvement over high pressure sodium lights, rated at 2200K.

6. High Impact Rating - IK08

IK08

Impact rating is a system from IK01 to IK10. Each designates a rating of impact resistance. IK08 rated fixtures can withstand impact from foreign objects and materials ensuring years of trouble free operation.

7. Lighting Controls

Photocell
Motion Sensor
Smart Controls

High intensity discharge lamps do not work with most lighting controls as they take a lot of time to warm up. In case of a power outage, you have to give them time to cool down before you can switch them on again.

LEDs work well with dimmers, motion sensors, photo-sensors and timer switches. You can pair your LED high masts with lighting controls to switch them on and off or dim them according to the need.

Our LED High Mast Lights are designed to work with both 3 pin and 7 pin Nema socket enabled controls and smart networks.

8. L70 Light Maintenance - 100,000 hours

50,000 hours
100,000 hours

One of the biggest downsides of HID mast lights is that they need a lot of maintenance. The lights have a lifespan of 12,000-25,000 hours. This means electricians must replace them frequently. This procedure that can be labor-intensive and time-consuming. When HID lights are being replaced, it might be a good time to replace the ballasts. This adds to the overall maintenance costs.

Both our DOT style and low profile LED High Mast lights have a L70 rating of 100,000 hours. Their L70 times are very long and don’t shift colors as they age. The lights are basically maintenance-free. The only maintenance that may occur is washing the fixtures.

9. High CRI - 70+ with options to 80+

70 CRI
80 CRI

One of the specifications you need to pay attention to is CRI (color rendering index). This is a measurement of the quality of light that the fixture is producing. It is a scale between 0 and 100. Sunlight is 100. High Pressure Sodium HPS is 22.

A general rule is that you need less quantity of light if you have better quality. LED has high CRI making the quality better than most traditional light sources.

One word of caution. High CRI is not required in traditional high mast outdoor environments (90+ CRI). It is great for retail environments where true color representation is important. We would not recommend a high CRI solution for an outdoor industrial application. It is not worth the extra cost.

10. Low Energy Consumption: save 50-80%

50-80% savings

Advancements in LEDs and higher lumens per watts configurations are now available. Reducing energy consumption by over 70% is not unreasonable. Using controls like day light and motion sensors, achieving reductions of 80% is achievable. It is important to note that you need to pay attention to a few details.

* Never buy a LED fixture based on the watts consumed. Focus on lumens, pay attention to lumens per watt. You will consume a lot more energy at 100 lumens/watt than you will at 140 lumens per watt. MyLEDLightingGuide products are in the higher lumens per watt configurations. Look for the products efficacy listed in their detail specifications. Or divide the lumens by watts consumed to determine efficacy.

* Look at the number of LEDs the fixture is using to produce the lumens. A fixture with fewer LEDs is driving the LEDs harder than a fixture with more LEDs. Life expectancy may be shorter. More LEDs driven less hard is a better combination of efficient and longevity.

11. High Mast Lighting - short Paybacks

Save Money with LED
But it's dependent on the "1+1+1 rule"

LED payback = Hours of Use + Reduced Use of Electricity + Rebates

Rebates may be the least important of the three. High hours of use and high cost of electricity will dwarf the benefits of a rebate.

Everyone likes a rebate. We have created many proposals where payback was under 1 year even without rebates. Contact us and we can help walk you through the math.

12. Salt Water Testing

Salt Water Testing

1000-5000 hour salt water tested for wet location marine environments, including container port lighting and naval bases. Corrosion resistant polyester powder coating ensures the fixtures are tough in salt water environments.

LED High Mast Light Fixtures replace Metal Halide and HPS

Industrial LED High Mast systems replace existing Metal Halide and HPS High Masts. Energy savings can be 70% or more when coupled with energy saving controls. They will provide high quality, high intensity lighting.

High Mast Applications

freeway interchanges

round-a-bouts

sea ports rail yards and transportation terminals

outdoors storage yards and parking zones

large area applications

outdoor lighting applications

airport lighting

The mounting heights range from 60 ft to 120 ft and above. The fixtures form a circular pattern to distribute the light over a large radius or area.

Freeway interchange poles usually have 2 to 12 1000W HPS fixtures. One 1000W HPS lamp consumes 1200W together with the ballast. A pole with 8 light fixtures equals a power consumption of 9.6kW. For that reason, cities have decided to switch the lights off after 11pm to save on lighting expenses. With LED, there is no need to switch off.

MyLEDLightingGuide will help you decide which of our industrial LED high mast area light systems is right for you.

Included are finishes designed to meet the harsh environments of coastal environments. Our outdoor LED High Mast lights & products are IP65 or higher rated and either UL or ETL listed. Most are DLC Qualified and rebate eligible. We offer a manufacturer 10 year warranty on some models.

Port Lighting

The trick is good lighting design - and that means picking the right optic for the application. Free Photometrics provided by us picks the proper optic for optimal light distribution.

We have port lighting solutions with poles 450 ft apart. The light's distributed evenly over the area while maintaining foot candle requirements.

Converting DOT High Mast Area lights to LED

A great opportunity for DOT's to save money is to convert HID High Mast lights to LED. Freeways and interchanges are lit with High Mast lights. A pole with 12 1000W HID lights consumes 12,000 watts. The same pole converted to 450W LED Fixtures consumes 5400 watts, a reduction of 6600 watts, a 55% reduction.

That means you can convert 2 poles to LED and it will stay consume less energy than 1 HID pole.

Quality of light comparing LED to High Pressure Sodium HPS improves from a CRI of 25 to a CRI of 70. This creates a safer driving experience. At 20,000 hours the HID bulbs will need replacement. The LEDs are still working perfectly, and almost as bright as the installation date.

Here are some quick savings scenarios. This walks through conversion savings when switching to LED. In each of these scenarios, we will assume the following:

Cost of electricity: .12 kw/h
Hours of operation: 12 hours a night
Number of days run each year: 365

Payback Calculation: Converting to LED

Several factors come into play.

  • The cost of the LED Product
  • Cost of installation and possibly disposing old fixtures.
  • Rebate to offset the purchase cost and cost of installation.
  • The efficiency of the LED product

High Mast Picture

The first two are obvious, this is the cost of the product and installation and disposal. Before you move forward, you need to think about point 3, the rebate. A conversation with the utility company needs to happen. In this conversation, you will find out what they rebate and how they calculate the rebate. You should ask the different rebate amounts they offer for DLC Qualified products. DLC Premium products are far more efficient than DLC Standard products.

To be DLC Premium Qualified, the efficacy of the product has to be above a specific threshold. Purchasing a DLC Premium product assures you of two things. You will consume less energy than a DLC Standard product. And possibly create more lumens (assuming they both consume the same amount of watts). The rebate for the DLC Premium product should be larger. So the more efficient the light, the quicker the payback. The sales engineers of MyLEDLightingGuide can perform a payback analysis for you.
