3. Optics Options for Cobra Head Fixtures

LEDs are directional lights. Their light's focussed and with optics lights up the intended location. They have diodes with individual optics and discharge light across surfaces. Optics control the illumination pattern by delivering their designed beam pattern.

Another great thing about LED Cobra-Head is they can dim down. This means you can turn off or dim each fixture in the absence of motion. This does not affect the life of the LEDs, other than it will extend it. And a dimmed light uses less electricity, saving you even more on your lighting bill.

Think about this. Converting Metal Halide to LED, you might switch from 400 Watts to 120W. At night, if the light dims to 10%, that means the LED is now using 12W. That's a reduction of 388 Watts. (actually the HID lamp consumes 455W with the ballast draw, so you're saving 443W per fixture. That's huge!)

We offer color temperature options in both 4000K and 5000K. 5000K is a perfect replacement for Metal Halide. 4000K is also an option for those states requiring a warmer light. Other color temperatures available upon request.

Both offer a significant improvement over high pressure sodium lights, rated at 2200K. LED fixtures with a CCT of 3000K - 4000K (or a little less) are the best for street lighting in residential areas. The amount of blue light they emit is small.

One of the specifications you need to pay attention to is CRI (color rendering index). This is a measurement of the quality of light that the fixture is producing. It is a scale between 0 and 100. Sunlight is 100. A general rule is that you need less quantity of light if you have better quality. LED has high CRI making the quality better than most traditional light sources.

Lumen maintenance relates to the lifespan of a light source. LED lights do not burn out like traditional lights. They maintain initial lumens longer. What happens is the light intensity fades, but this usually takes years.

A 70% deterioration in light output is the point at which the human eye notices a decline in the intensity. But, the human eye is only affected when the light intensity of a light source reaches a level of 30%.

Luminous efficacy is the true measure of a bulb’s efficiency. It indicates the lumens produced for every watt of electricity consumed. LEDs are more efficient than traditional bulbs with a higher luminous efficacy. High quality LEDs have awesome efficacy ratings. The standard luminous efficacy is upwards of 130 lumens per watt.

To calculate luminous efficacy, divide the number of lumens the lamp generates by the watts of electricity it consumes. LED light fixtures with a higher luminous efficacy are more efficient than a lower efficacy.

LED lights offer high-quality light and use fewer watts than traditional HID lighting. What this means is that you will have more intense light but your power bill will decrease. Most of the traditional HID street lights use between 250 and 1000 watts. That does not include the extra 15% energy used for ballast draw.

If we compare this to LEDs, which consume 40 to 300 watts – there is a 40% to 60% reduction in energy. Greater savings with the addition of lighting controls.

Maintenance costs drops to near zero. Most street lights need a lift to replace or maintain. These jobs are not cheap. Installing a LED fixture that can last 10+ years mean huge maintenance savings.

Light pollution occurs in different ways like light trespass (light spill), sky glow, glare, and light clutter. It affects the environment as carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. The International Dark-Sky Association states each year 12 million tons of CO2 releases from night time lights. The association also estimates that 30% of all street light is wasted.

Light pollution also affects the lifestyle of mammals, birds, amphibians, and insects. It causes disorientation and affects their migration, sleeping, mating, and feeding cycles. LED technology addresses this problem by focusing light only where it's required.

High Energy Consumption

First of all, the energy consumption of traditional street lights is high. Street lighting accounts for up to 40% of the total energy usage in many cities. During cold weather, traditional lamps need more energy to produce enough light. Sometimes, they can burst. Newer and more efficient LED street lighting reduces energy consumption.

Over Lighting and Light Trespass

Over lighting is another problem. Traditional sodium lamps, cannot dim and thus provide unnecessary bright light. Very bright street lights not only cause light pollution, it affects our sleep and health.

Another problem with street lighting is the maintenance of traditional lighting systems. Due to their short lifespan and poor light quality, they need re-lamping and servicing often. A lot of time is wasted on the maintenance process. Money is also spent in purchasing new lamps, fixtures, and on labor.

There is also the inconvenience faced by residents during light maintenance or repairs. For repairs to take place authorities may have to block portions of streets for safety purposes. Residents then have to use alternative routes which takes longer to get to the destinations.

Also, most cities require street lighting problems like broken lights reported. It may take a long time for faulty lights to be repaired after residents report the problems.

This means that if one street has a couple of faulty lights, it may be dark for a couple of days before repairs. Residents will not feel safe walking or cycling on these streets. The high quality and long lifespan of LED street lights solves this problem, they do not need frequent replacements.

Traditional lights like high and low pressure sodium produce a harsh yellow light and poor color rendering. Residents and law enforcement personnel can't see objects, vehicles, and people as well.

Lamp Location

Old fashioned street lighting on some streets is uneven distributed. Lamp posts are far apart from each other, creating wide dark patches. In other locations, some critical areas along the street do not have lamp posts. And as cities developed over the years, the lamp locations have not been re-assessed. The lights remains inadequate.

Stray Voltage

A serious problem with street lighting is possible stray voltage. Unnoticeable small stray voltages can cause lamp posts to get electrified. Damaged insulation within the pole can be very dangerous. It could cause electrical shock and injure anyone that comes into contact with the pole.
