Industrial LED High Mast systems replace existing Metal Halide and HPS High Masts. Energy savings can be 70% or more when coupled with energy saving controls. They will provide high quality, high intensity lighting.

Port Lighting

High Mast lighting systems illuminate:

The mounting heights range from 60 ft to 120 ft and above. The fixtures form a circular pattern to distribute the light over a large radius or area.

Freeway interchange poles usually have 2 to 12 1000W HPS fixtures. One 1000W HPS lamp consumes 1200W together with the ballast. A pole with 8 light fixtures equals a power consumption of 9.6kW. For that reason, cities have decided to switch the lights off after 11pm to save on lighting expenses. With LED, there is no need to switch off.

3 Reasons to Convert your High Mast Lights over to LED

1. Energy savings up to 80%


Advancements in LEDs and higher lumens per watts configurations are now available. Reducing energy consumption by over 70% is not unreasonable. Using controls like day light and motion sensors, achieving reductions of 80% is achievable. It is important to note that you need to pay attention to a few details.

* Never buy a LED fixture based on the watts consumed. Focus on lumens, pay attention to lumens per watt. You will consume a lot more energy at 100 lumens/watt than you will at 140 lumens per watt. MyLEDLightingGuide products are in the higher lumens per watt configurations. Look for the products efficacy listed in their detail specifications. Or divide the lumens by watts consumed to determine efficacy.

* Look at the number of LEDs the fixture is using to produce the lumens. A fixture with fewer LEDs is driving the LEDs harder than a fixture with more LEDs. Life expectancy may be shorter. More LEDs driven less hard is a better combination of efficient and longevity.

3. Increased Light Quality with Bright High Mast Lighting


One of the specifications you need to pay attention to is CRI (color rendering index). This is a measurement of the quality of light that the fixture is producing. It is a scale between 0 and 100. Sunlight is 100. A general rule is that you need less quantity of light if you have better quality. LED has high CRI making the quality better than most traditional light sources. But CRI alone is not the only factor. Some traditional sources, like fluorescent also have high CRI. Because these technologies are AC powered, they "flicker", causing eye strain and headaches. LED drivers convert AC to DC, which means no flicker. So higher quality lighting with no flicker makes for a better production environment.

One word of caution. High CRI is not required in traditional high mast outdoor environments (90+ CRI). It is great for retail environments where true color representation is important. We would not recommend a high CRI solution for an outdoor industrial application. It is not worth the extra cost.


What Is High Mast Lighting?

Lights mounted on top of tall mast poles. The lighting poles are typically 60-120 feet tall. A single lighting pole may have 4 to 12 fixtures mounted.

Illuminating large areas isn't easy and high masts have very powerful lights. Until LED, most high mast lights featured high pressure sodium bulbs. But these lights have high maintenance costs (because of their short lifespans). They consume a lot of electricity and take a long time to warm up and cool down. This is why LEDs were such a welcome change. They completely transformed the way high masts light up large spaces.

Here are some things you should always keep in mind when it comes to high mast lighting.


1. Point the Light to where its needed


No question about it, illuminating a large area requires a lot of precision. An important consideration when lighting large outdoor spaces is light lumens and distribution. There's no need to install high lumen lights if distribution is poor or spotty.

LEDs are directional lights. Their light's focussed and with optics lights up the intended location. They have diodes with individual optics and discharge light evenly across surfaces. HID lights are omni-directional. They use reflectors which direct the light where it's needed. Reflectors are never 100% efficient and you can lose up to 30% of the lumens during the reflective process.

LED lights do not cause glare and their optics focus the light produced by the LED chips. Optics control the illumination pattern by delivering narrower beam angles.


If your high masts use HID lighting systems, you may have to tilt them to direct the light. Traditional lights also have the tendency to cause glare. They create very bright spots directly beneath them.

2. Color Temperature Is Important


Temperature is a number that specifies the color of light emitted by a light source. Low number warm lights have red and orange shades (2700K-3000K). Mid range 4000K lights are day white lights with a hint of warmness. High number cool lights with white and blue shades (5000K-6000K and above).

HPS lighting systems have low color temperatures and emit light with an orange glow. Which makes it difficult for people to recognize the details of objects. LEDs are available with high color temperatures. They give off bright white light which reveals the true colors of objects. The light they produce does not cause eye strain and enables people to carry out their tasks with ease.


3. Think of Light Maintenance


One of the biggest downsides of HID mast lights is that they need a lot of maintenance. The lights have a lifespan of 12,000-25,000 hours. This means electricians must replace them frequently. This procedure that can be labor-intensive and time-consuming. When HID lights are being replaced, it might be a good time to replace the ballasts. This adds to the overall maintenance costs.

HIDs also have a very high rate of lumen depreciation. They lose 1/2 of their lumen output at half-life. The degradation process is also not a straightforward. They start to shift colors as they reach the end of their lifespans. It is not uncommon to change out the bulbs as soon as their efficiency decreases. Lumen degradation affects safety and productivity.

LEDs have long lifespans (50,000 to 100,000 hours). Their L70 times are very long and don’t shift colors as they age. The lights are basically maintenance-free. The only maintenance that may occur is washing the fixtures.

The Lighting Controls Paired With Lights


One important thing we often forget is how much we can save by dimming lights or turning them of.

High intensity discharge lamps do not work with most lighting controls as they take a lot of time to warm up. In case of a power outage, you have to give them time to cool down before you can switch them on again. LEDs work well with dimmers, motion sensors, photo-sensors and timer switches. You can pair your LED high masts with lighting controls to switch them on and off or dim them according to the need.

One place where you can find LED high mast lights with controls is in airport tarmacs. It allows specific control of instant lighting options at an airport.

If you own or manage an area with high mast lights, you should consider upgrading to LED.

LED fixtures can replace existing HID fixtures and instantly reduce energy consumption. They will brighten the area, reduce maintenance costs, and paybacks are relatively quick.

 LED High Mast lights reduce the electrical load per pole. The weigh less than the lights they are replacing. HID ballasts are heavy. Coupled with motion sensors, LED High Masts can dim when activity in an area diminishes.

Converting DOT High Mast lights over to LED

A great opportunity for DOT's to save money is to convert HID High Mast lights to LED. Freeways and interchanges are lit with High Mast lights. A pole with 12 1000W HID lights consumes 12,000 watts. The same pole converted to 450W LED Fixtures consumes 5400 watts, a reduction of 6600 watts, a 55% reduction.

That means you can convert 2 poles to LED and it will stay consume less energy than 1 HID pole.

Quality of light comparing LED to HPS improves from a CRI of 25 to a CRI of 70. This creates a safer driving experience. At 20,000 hours the HID bulbs will need replacement. The LEDs are still working perfectly, and almost as bright as the installation date.

Here are some quick savings scenarios. This walks through conversion savings when switching to LED.

In each of these scenarios, we will assume the following:

1. Retrofitting 400W Metal Halide with 100W LED Kits  - 4 lights per pole.


In this scenario, energy reduction is reduced by 350 Watts per fixture.

We assume a ballast draw of 55W per fixture for the metal halide fixture.

Several factors come into play.  

  • The cost of the LED Product
  • Cost of installation and possibly disposing old fixtures.
  • Rebate to offset the purchase cost and cost of installation.
  • The efficiency of the LED product

Retrofit High Mast Lights with LED

The first two are obvious, this is the cost of the product and installation and disposal. Before you move forward, you need to think about point 3, the rebate. A conversation with the utility company needs to happen. In this conversation, you will find out what they rebate and how they calculate the rebate. You should ask the different rebate amounts they offer for DLC Qualified products. DLC Premium products are far more efficient than DLC Standard products.

To be DLC Premium Qualified, the efficacy of the product has to be above a specific threshold. Purchasing a DLC Premium product assures you of two things. You will consume less energy than a DLC Standard product. And possibly create more lumens (assuming they both consume the same amount of watts).
