How Do Emergency Exit Signs Work?

The exit sign is lit from a power source at all times. When the power source is disrupted, then a battery backup kicks in and keeps the exit sign lit. When power is present, it is also used to recharge the battery.

Emergency lights should be placed in hallways and general locations to light up pathways to available exits. Corridors and stairwells should all contain emergency lights.

All doors lead to exits, as well as doors to stairwells. Your city or town will identify what is required as part of your permitting.

Are Exit Signs Waterproof?

We have wet-rated exit signs. We also have a series of explosion-rated exit signs that are waterproof and IK10 impact-resistant. However, most standard exit signs are not waterproof as they are normally used indoors.

Do I Need an Exit Sign with Emergency Lights, or Can I Just Use Exit Signs?

Your local building code will help you get the proper mix of lights. We offer all three, exit signs, emergency lighting, and exit signs with emergency lights.

Yes, they are directly wired to the power source and should always be powered.

They are fire-resistant and are designed to withstand flames for certain periods. However, the most standard options are not.

At least 1 for every doorway leading out of the building, and at every door leading to a stairwell if that stairwell is designed as a means of egress. Check with your local building inspectors for their guidance and guidelines.

Once power is restored, the lights should go off automatically. So, there is no need to turn them off.

Yes, we highly recommend they be installed by a qualified electrician.

No, they should be wired to the normal electrical circuits of the building.
