Garage Lighting Layout
What is a Garage Lighting Layout?
A Garage Lighting Layout is a Lighting Plan that addresses the lighting in a specific garage work area. Garage work shops are typically areas with ceiling heights that are less than 15 ft high. They are either purpose built areas or re-purposed home garage.
They are areas where work is done and performed. Garage work shops can be used for working on cars or motorcycles or as a hobby wood working shop,
Using photometric layout software, you can create a lighting model an indoor garage area layout. It allows you to define garage dimensions, ceiling height, existing light locations or ideal light location.
Lighting engineers can utilize different garage shop light fixtures at specific locations, orientations and height to determine what is the optimal design to provide the best garage lighting design solution.
The software calculates light levels and provides a comprehensive visual layout report. The report displays calculation points representing the foot candle reading at defined locations.
How many lumens do you need for a garage shop work area?
The number you need depends a lot on the use and type of work being performed.
For general work, consider 20-30 foot candles
For work around machines, consider 50-75 foot candles
For fine detail work, consider 100+ foot candles
How many lights for 24X24 garage?
This shop is 100 ft X 100 ft with 20 ft high ceilings. The software calculated that it would need 42 150W LED UFO High Bays to meet the 75 foot candles requirement.
150W LED UFO High Bay (42 fixtures)
100×100 Garage Lighting Example (target of 50 foot candles)
This shop is 100 ft X 100 ft with 20 ft high ceilings. The software calculated that it would need 36 120W LED UFO High Bays to achieve the 50 foot candles requirement.
120W LED UFO High Bay (36 fixtures)
Garage Workshop Lighting Calculator
MyLEDLightingGuide does not offer a garage workshop lighting calculator. The reason is most online workshop lighting calculators will simply calculate the number of fixtures needed to produce X foot candles in a space. It does not show foot candles at specific locations or how evenly distributed the light is.
