What is a high bay light?

A "High Bay" is a tall ceiling space. The “Bay” is an area with a ceiling that is 20 feet high and taller. An indoor light installed in this area is a “High Bay Light”. It’s designed to light up the floor and work area from mounting heights greater than 20 feet high.

 

What are the best high bay LED lights?

This is a very subjective question. Best can change based on the specific needs of the customer. What is best for one area may not be best for another. Conditions may exist that requires the use of a specific fixture over another. It may be because of light levels, distribution, heat, mounting height. Or it may be in a hazardous location.

How many high bay lights do I need?

The best way to do this is to create a lighting plan using your facility. A lighting plan uses buildings dimensions and other factors and creates a software representation. We can then add your existing light locations and model this with different light options.

Why are lighting plans important? They allow you to see your area and how it would look under LED Lighting taking the risk out of buying. We can run different options with our lights, and provide you with the proper information and guidance. We're here to save you money with LED. But it's as important to get the lighting right. 

What height is considered high bay?

A High Bay is a ceiling height that is 20 ft or higher. Below that, it's considered a low bay. High Bays has no upper height limits, but its rare to see buildings with rooms over 100 ft high.

How do you calculate lighting for an area?

The best way to calculate lighting for an area is to create a lighting plan using special lighting software. MyLEDLightingGuide specializes in creating these lighting plans. To start, you can purchase a light meter or install a light meter application on your smart phone.

Walk to different locations in your area and take readings in foot candles or lux. Tell us what those readings are, and whether you think the light is good, too bright or not bright enough. Tell us if the light is even across the area. 

From this information, we can model your area in our software and give you options before you purchase and decide. We provide this service for FREE. It takes the risk out of buying LED.

Luminous efficacy is the true measure of a bulb’s efficiency. It indicates the lumens produced for every watt of electricity consumed. LEDs are more efficient than traditional bulbs. 

We have fixtures that are rated between 130 and 180 lumens/watt. We can help you choose the right efficiency.

* Trade off between initial cost and long term savings?

A higher efficiency LED product costs more than lower efficiency units. The savings over the life of the product is more than the initial investment needed to upgrade.

 

So if you're looking to maximize savings when converting to LED, choose the higher efficiency product.

IP rating designates a fixtures ability to keep out both dust and water. The first digit of the IP score designates dust protection, the second designates water protection. A water protection score of 5 or above helps protect your fixtures from water intrusion.

MyLEDLightingGuide offers IP ratings of IPx5, IPx6 and IPx7. This allows you to install these fixtures in damp, moist or wet conditions.

* What IP Rating do you need?

IP65 is all you will need for most applications. Extreme environments, such as high pressure washes, might need IP67 or higher.

Are you trying to replace fixtures that are higher voltages, 277V to 480V? We have solutions that cover these higher voltage installations.

Our constant current drivers are equipped to handle everything from 100 Volts up to to 480 Volts (standard driver in our kits are 100V-277V).

We can handle single or 3-phase power as well. Talk to our sales engineers and we can get your lighting situation taken care of.

Our higher voltage solutions handle both single phase and 3 phase 480V installations. If you have voltage above 277V, tell our sales engineers so we can specify the proper driver.

Color Temperature Options

 

4000K
5000K

Color temperature (CCT) measures the temperature of a light source. The Kelvin scale measures a bulb's color temperature.

Bulbs with a low color temperature produce warm light (in the red, orange, and yellow spectrum). Those with a high color temperature produce cool light (in blue and white spectrum).

We offer 4000K and 5000K options for indoor lighting. Not sure which one you should select? We can help!

* LED Color Choice

To replace Metal Halide, 5000K is a great color choice. If you would like a warmer light, choose 4000K. HPS high bays are around 2300K. Moving to 4000K or 5000K will greatly improve the quality of indoor light.

Light Quality: Color Rendering Index

Color rendering index defines the quality of light. It tells us how well a light source will reveal colors when compared to sunlight (the ideal light source).

When it comes to HID lamps, people usually complain about one thing: poor light color.

Light color is important in high bay applications. It has a huge impact on clarity and contrast.

Most of our High Bay fixtures are offered between CRI 70 and 85. We can special order almost any CRI you might need. 

* LED CRI

Anything over 70 is good. In applications such as assembly work where fine detail is necessary, then select 80 to 90 CRI.

LED High Bay Beam Angles: Proper Light Distribution

The beam angle is what determines the distribution of light. A wide beam angle produces distributes light well at lower ceiling heights < 25 ft.

A narrow beam angle produces concentrated light good for higher ceiling applications. It makes the light more intense and focused. More importantly, it delivers light to the floor and work plane instead of the walls.

Our LED bay lights are available in a range of beam angles: from 15° (narrow) to 120° (wide).

Ask us to run a lighting photometric to determine the perfect light and beam angle for your indoor space. Look at both the foot candle measurements and max/min ratios to make sure your space is bright and uniform.

Motion Sensors and other controls can dramatically reduce lighting costs by turning off or dimming the lights when people leave the area.

PIR and microwave motion sensors can be added to turn the lights on when motion is detected and off / dimmed when no activity is detected.

To dim, high bay fixtures need a 0-10V dimmable driver. Dimming LED fixtures does not affect the life of the led fixture.

And if you're trying to save additional money, dimming will save you even more money!
