Super Charge your Savings with LED




We all know, or at least heard, of the savings associated when you switch from fluorescent or HID lighting over to LED. But you know there are some simple add-ons that can significantly increase your savings?



Step 1: Converting to LED


So let's say you have HID lighting, like MetalHalide or HPS flood lights in your yard or canopy lights in a parking garage. Maybe your lights are currently 400W, and you decide to convert to LED using one of MyLEDLightingGuide 100W (LED) Retrofit Units. For purpose of discussion, your lights are on only at night, and that equates to 12 hours a day or 4380 hours a year. Here is a chart of the savings, based on your cost of electricity, you can expect to save for each light you convert over to LED.

So for example, if your cost per electricity is .14 kw/hr, you can expect to save $221 per fixture per year.

Step 2: Add controls to increase the savings

LED's are the perfect application of adding controls to save money. The problem with HID lighting and most forms of fluorescent lighting is they do not work with controls like motion sensors that either turn on or off the lights (impossible with HID due to long strike times) or dim down the lights when no activity is detected.

Adding a simple motion sensor to a LED light along with a 0-10V dimmable driver means you can dim down the light when no activity is detected for a certain period of time. Say for example you are using LED for yard light security. Do you really need them on at full power 100% of the time? Maybe 50% is good enough, and when motion is detected, they can turn back up to full power. Think of a typical night - High probability there may be little activity. So lets take the above chart, and assume your lights are running at 50% output most of the time. Here's what that savings looks like.
