How Much Stadium Lighting Costs in 2017



The year of 2017 brings along more advancements in the commercial lighting space. And in a world in which things are changing so rapidly with lighting technology in virtually every way, it can be difficult to get everything you need to know in one place. For this reason, we've created this post in hopes of helping you get a rough guideline of the actual stadium lighting costs for the current year, 2017.

Along with that, giving you the outlets to research more on the topic and get you one step closer to getting the most efficient and ROI focused technology illuminating your fields. This post will be broken into two parts; the typical costs associated with the physical light itself and everything related to buying stadium lights. Secondly, the typical costs to powering your lights and how certain technologies may save you more money than others and how you can go about getting the highest return on investment when choosing a lighting technology and brand to go with.     

To start off, we are going to cover the technical terminology of stadium lighting.


Defining Stadium Lighting

Firstly, stadium lighting is the simple term for high mast lighting. High masts are the most common type of light fixture found in a sports field for the reason that they output such high amounts of light (or lumens) and are made to be installed on top of high stadium light poles.   In regards to other technical terms, there are far too many to cover here. But, we think you should know the definition of lumens as we will be using it quite often. To explain, a lumen is the SI unit of luminous flux. This is equal to the amount of light emitted per second in a unit solid angle of one steradian from a uniform source of one candela. Sure, you might not understand all of that, and you don't have to. Just understand that basically lumen output is light output in a measurable way. The more lumens, the more light you will have being outputted. 

Now we are going to start answering the question of how much do stadium lights cost for you so you can best estimate, plan for, and be educated about stadium lighting and the options that are available in todays marketplace.  


The Costs of Your Physical Stadium Light Fixtures

In regards to the costs of the actual high mast / stadium light, it can very greatly.   You have five main factors that play into this:

1. The technology (LED, metal halide, etc)
2. The brand or company you purchase from
3. Retrofitting or full replacement
4. Quantity typically reduces cost (as most things)
5. Your fields lux requirements / needs  

Of course, some technologies are cheaper than others upfront and some companies are cheaper than others. But what you must remember before buying off of price is the long term effect and costs of the technology and company you buy from. Not just price alone! If you could buy a comparable light which outputs the same lumen count, but one used 1500w and the other used 500w but the first one was $500 and the second was $1,000, which would you choose? It really depends on which mentality you have. If you look at the long term cost saving benefits, you would choose the lower wattage light. If you are looking for the cheapest upfront option, the less expensive but higher wattage light would probably be your choice.  

But
, we hope that by the end of this post you see why making the investment in a more efficient lighting fixtures will pay off big time down the line; even if it is slightly more costly initially.   As for actual costs, they can seriously vary far too greatly for us to list here. It depends, like we said, on what lighting technology you choose, which company you buy from, the quantity you need, if you are retrofitting or fully replacing your fixture, and what your lux requirements are. A quick note on retrofitting or replacing in simple terms, retrofitting is typically cheaper. Retrofitting is the process of replacing only the luminaire source from your fixture, instead of the entire fixture itself.

Cost of Running Your Stadium Lights

Since we seriously believe LED is the best option for stadiums and sports fields to illuminate their place, we are going to use that as our example (and recommendation). Let's keep it simple so you can use our example to get a rough idea what it will cost to run your lights. Let's say you have 10 lights. Currently, your high masts are metal halide and use 1,500 watts per fixture. Now, let's say you are looking for a more efficient technology and you come across LED. You find a comparable light which will output the same amount of light (or lumens), and only consumes 400 watts per fixture. In total, the metal halide lights are consuming 15,000 watts in total (when in use) and the LEDs would (if chosen) be using only 5,000 watts. That is 3 times less energy, which can lead to some great savings. This reduction from 1,500 watts to 500 watts per fixture is the exact reason fields both small and large fields are converting to LED over other technologies like metal halide and HPS. For example, we often find that fields that convert to LED with us from metal halide or HPS high mast pole lights realize a payback of their investment in as little as 1 year. Additionally, since LEDs last much longer they get to realize these cost savings for much longer and thus; a much higher ROI over the lifespan of the light.  

Additionally, since LEDs last longer they enjoy an additional benefit of less maintenance requirements. This allows more cost savings as an indirect benefit of LED high mast lighting. 

Tips for Reducing Costs
  • Choose an efficient lighting technology (LED is highly efficient, if not the most efficient on average)
  • Reduce maintenance costs with long-lifespan LED lights
  • Retrofit if you can, full replacements cost more
  • Rebates can reduce the cost of your investment substantially - make sure you find out if your purchase will qualify for rebates beforehand if you can (rebates can reduce project costs by nearly 20-25%)
