LED Industrial Indoor Bay Lighting Prices in 2018




In 2018, the typical LED industrial indoor bay fixture price is more variable than ever. You have brands that offer cheaper and less efficient options all the way up to the premium products and brands; and then everything in-between. We like to take an analytical approach that looks at the real raw numbers that allows you to best justify the cost of one light to the next. We do this by considering the price, wattage, lumens, and other factors (such as lifespan, qualifications, and warranties). Below, we cover the average price for these lights price in 2018. After that, we explore what exactly you should look at when considering price to get the best value that will maximize savings long-term.



Average LED Lighting Prices in 2018

Price ranges are a bad factor to base your purchasing decisions on solely. A better indicator of a good value is comparing cost to lumens per watt, which we go over below.  In general though, typical prices vary from $100 on the low end all the way up to around $500 on the higher end (to replace 1500W MH). Now, there are difference types of fixtures, lumen outputs, efficiencies, and cooling styles that can effect a fixtures price. Typically though, you will find the highest value (cost vs efficiency) in the middle of this range.

Cost to lumens/watt Comparison

To better compare value, we introduce you to start comparing fixture prices to the lumens per watt they offer.   Calculating lumens per watt is simple, here is an example: Take our 150W UFO LED fixture for example, which outputs ~21,000 lumens. Then, divide the fixtures lumen output (in this case, 21,000 lumens) by the total wattage the fixture is labeled at (150W in this example). 21,000 / 150 = 140. This number is the number of lumens per watt that the fixture outputs.  

Why is lumens per watt important to consider?
  For one reason... it presents the true efficiency of a fixture. The more lumens per watt you have, the less watts you will need to run in comparison to a less efficient fixture.  

For comparison, take a comparable competitors LED product that outputs 19,000 lumens at 150 watts. This comes out to about ~126 lumens per watt. This means that our 150W unit (used in the previous calculation above) could be dimmed down to only consume around ~136 watts and still provide the same light output of 19,000 lumens that the comparable light takes 150 watts to run.  

To take it a step further, we need to justify the cost difference to save 14 watts of energy, per fixture. To do this, we need an example scenario that is fairly common:   Assume you run your lights run 12 hours a day, 365 days a year. This would mean the less efficient light that needs to run at 150W per day would consume around 657 kWh/year, per fixture. Comparing that to our light that consumes only 136 watts, it would consume around 596 kWh/year, per fixture. Assuming the United States average cost per kWh is $0.12, this would result in a $8.32 savings per year, per fixture, when choosing our fixture.

Also, assuming that the fixture will last around 50,000 all the way up to 100,000 hours before it will need replacement, the total cost savings by buying the higher efficient light would result in savings ranging from $83.20 all the way to $166.40. As a result, it is much easier to justify spending a little bit more for a better product which will result in greater savings over the long term.  

After this comparison, you may be able to see why it's simply not practical to only consider the listing price. As you saw in the example, our 150w LED fixture price was justified (even if it was $20 more per fixture) due to the long term savings advantage it offer, per fixture. Multiply those savings over 5, 10, 20, 50, or 100+ fixtures and the savings really add up.  

Keep in mind: LEDs are typically never ran at their listed wattage, so the energy consumption may be a bit different than you'd expect. With that said, the differences in savings is still comparable to what we talked about.
 

Other Pricing Considerations

All else equal, it's a good idea to consider other benefits of which fixture (and company) to put your trust into. In general, it is a good idea to deliberately look out for the following benefits that are not found everywhere:
  • Warranties (5-10 years is optimal)
  • Extra options (dimmable, mounting types, fixture styles, optics, etc)
  • Qualifications (DLC)
  • Exceptional customer support
  • Design & layout support
  • Low / free shipping costs
  • Reasonable return policies
  • In Stock - ready to ship today
