Do you need High Voltage LED Drivers?

Our LED HID Retrofit Kits don't come with a Mogul Socket Adapter. This is a good thing!
Many old fixtures have an E39 socket or mogul base. They engineers designed then to hold a 400W and 1000W HID bulb, not retrofit kits that weigh 5X more.
Imagine a shoebox fixture in an outdoor application, 20 ft in the air on a windy day. The fixture will sway, stress the mogul socket and eventually fail. The retrofit kit will fall to the glass of the fixture.
MyLEDLightingGuide Kits include mounting adapters to replace the mogul socket. This provides a secure, fail safe mount for the LED Head. Our installation procedure includes the removal of the mogul socket.
DesignLights Consortium DLC Premium Qualifications only apply to direct mount kits. So if you want a safer mounting option and a higher rebate, avoid using a mogul base adapter.
What are the steps for you to install a retrofit kit inside a metal halide fixture?
Installation of a HID retrofit kit - a simple and fast process
A typical installation is around 15-20 minutes per fixture
Turn off the Power to the existing fixture, and open the fixture up to expose the bulb and ballast.
Remove the bulb, ballast and socket from the fixture.
Remove the reflector - only if the reflector is not part of the fixture's watertight seal.
Install the LED driver in the location of the old HID Ballast. Wire the driver to the same wires that powered the ballast.
Configure the mounting arm for your fixture. Install the arm to the fixture and then install the LED Head to the mounting arm.
Connect the wires of the LED Head to the wires of the LED Driver.
Position and aim the LED Head to optimize light distribution.
Remove the protective plastic cover from the LED head.
Clean the glass of the fixture (if required) and close the fixture.
Turn the power back on.

What is a LED retrofit kit for HID Fixtures?
A LED Retrofit Kit for HID consists of a head, driver and mounting arm. It replaces the HID (Metal Halide or HPS) bulb and ballast made so you keep your original fixture.
Is it difficult for you to install a HID to LED Retrofit Kit?
If you have limited experience with wiring lighting fixtures, it may be difficult. If you are a professional electrician, this is as simple as a bulb and ballast replacement.
The process is simple. It consists of replacing the existing bulb, ballast, socket and brackets with the LED kit. Remove the reflector. The kit bolts to the fixture using the same mounting holes used to attach the socket. The driver installs where the ballast was. We recommend to bring in a licensed electrician to ensure the proper installation.
Will a normal fixture lose its UL or ETL certification after it is retro fitted with LED?
It should not, as long as you follow all the instructions associated with the product. Our products have the UL1598C retrofit standard, which is a bulb replacement standard. UL and ETL understand the purpose of the HID Retrofit Kits is to convert the existing fixture to LED. It replaces the ballast with the LED driver and the bulb with the LED Head. The certification process includes testing the Retrofit Kits inside a fixture.
Why would you retrofit versus buy a new fixture?
There are times where you have or want to use the existing fixtures. In other circumstances, replacement is OK. Local governments might mandate wiring upgrades if you install new fixtures.
Retrofitting may allow you to bypass code upgrades by utilizing the existing fixture. You may also have a significant investment in a particular architectural fixture. Replacement is not an option.
How much energy can you expect to save after you retrofit from Metal Halide to LED?
You should expect at a least 70% energy savings. This depends on the what you are replacing and what LED model you choose. Adding controls will help you save more. Adding motion sensors to a parking lot fixtures will allow you to dim the light when there is no activity. When the fixture detects motion, the fixture can switch to 100% levels again.
How long do your HID to LED Retrofit Kits last?
HID LED Kits tested for 100,000 (L70) hours of use, in normal operating conditions. This is about 6X longer than metal halide, HPS or other similar lighting technologies.
L70 is a standard that defines how many hours it will take for the light to reach 70% of initial lumens. Compared to HID bulbs with a lifespan between 12,000 to 20,000 hours, the L50 is at bulb half-life.
Can HID to LED Retrofit Kits handle 347V and 480V?
We offer 2 power supply options. The standard kit comes with a 100V-277V driver. An optional driver option is 277V-480V. The drivers automatically adjust for your incoming power and voltage, so there is no adjustments or settings to alter after installation.
