Warehouse and Factories are switching to high bay LED light fixtures for 4 main reasons
1. Reduce their utility bills
LED Warehouse and Factory high bay lighting products use significantly less energy than a Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium High Bays. Typical energy reduction is 50% or greater. Yet, we typically see both an increase in light levels and increase in the quality of light. There are numerous reasons for this:
- higher CRI or quality of light index, so the light produced is higher quality. The general rule, you need less quantity if you have higher quality.
- directionality of light: LEDs are directional, so if you design a fixture to shine all the light down, that is where it is going. If you think about a Metal Halide bulb, the light is going everywhere (omni-directional), so you have to rely on reflectors to get the light to the ground. Any time you have to use a reflector to gather and focus light, you lose effective lumens.
- longer lumen maintenance. Our customer have told us that many HID and fluorescent products start bright and dim quickly. So while the initial lumens of some of these products seem amazing, it does not appear that all of them have staying power.
2. Reduced maintenance costs when you use LED High Bay Lighting Systems
Many high bay and fluorescent fixtures in warehouses and factories are installed at heights exceeding 30 feet or more. Top that with the fact that is not always practical to change a warehouse light bulb in the middle of a work shift. The cost of personnel plus the cost of the lost floor time productions makes Metal Halide, High Pressure Sodium and fluorescent bulb and ballast replacement expensive. With exceptionally long life and extremely high L70 lifetimes, it is not unreasonable for one to get 10+ years out of a high bay LED product with little if any maintenance.
Some of our LED high bay luminaires Fi have rated L70 hours of 100,000+ hours. For factory and warehouse owners, this means years of maintenance free operation. During that same period, HID and fluorescent bulbs will have gone through many bulb and ballast replacements. That means additional bulb, ballast, labor and disposal costs will be reduced. This is an especially large cost reduction when you start considering how tall your ceilings are as the higher your high bays are up, the more expensive they get to maintain.
3. Durability in Extreme Environments
Some factory environments have harsh conditions (such as vibration) that may cause Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium bulbs to prematurely fail. LED's, on the other hand, are solid state electronic light devices that are not affected by vibration or shaking. This allows our high bay LED luminaire systems to fit perfectly into any commercial or industrial environment without effecting the lifespan of the light.
4. Using motion sensors and day light harvesters with LED High Bays
By adding Smart Controls such as motion sensors, bi-level controls or a complete wireless control system, cost saving can be dramatically increased. A general rule of thumb is that controls can save you an additional 50% over and above what the LEDs are saving you. And unlike other technologies that see shortened life spans with turning on and off the fixture with motion sensors, our high bay LED replacement lighting products are not affected by motion sensors and constant on-off cycling. By nature of its design, you would not want to dim or add a motion sensor to a HID light, where it is practical to want and do both with a LED light. Think about that. What type of LED High Bay Lighting Style should you buy?
There are a lot of options on the market today. There seems to be 5 main options: traditional style, UFO style, panel style, linear style and retrofit.
1. LED Traditional Styled High Bay
These traditional commercial high bay lighting fixtures look a lot like what we think a normal high bay should look like. They are reminiscent of traditional style Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium High bays.
These high bay LED fixtures can replace both 400W and 1000W Metal Halide. The smallest unit is 80W producing 10,240 lumens. There is a 160W unit producing 19,200 lumens. This would be a good 400W Metal Halide replacement. And the largest unit at 400W produces 51,200 lumens. That's 128 lumens/watt. And, USA Made backed with a 10 year warranty.
2. LED UFO Style High Bay
These UFO styled LED High Bay Light Fixtures look like a UFO flying ship, they are low profile and the "ship" is actually the fixtures large heat sink. The dome on the top is the High Bays driver box
These LED high bays come in several models, and like the traditional High Bay above, they can replace 250W to 1000W HID High bays. They are also IP65 rated (waterproof), UL Listed (safety) and DLC Listed (rebates from the utility company)
3. LED Panel Style High Bay
These LED High Bay Lighting Fixtures look a lot like a troffer style panel. The advantages of this type of fixture are the LEDs are spread over a larger area. This has 2 main advantages - Great light distribution and large heat sink. It is important to realize these lights are particularly good at light distribution, creating an even distribution.
These High Bay LEDs can replace both 400W and 1000W Metal Halide. The smallest unit is 120W producing 15,360 lumens. There is a 150W unit producing 19,200 lumens and the largest unit at 300W produces 38,400 lumens. USA Made backed with a 10 year warranty like the traditional style high bay.
4. Linear Style LED Aisle High Bays
These high bay LED lighting fixtures are the perfect option as your high bay lighting LED system, which are great for aisles. Check the pictures at the bottom of this page for an installation before and after pictures.
These LED high bays can replace up to 400W Metal Halide with as little as 120W. If you look at the picture at the bottom of the page, they replaced 400W HPS with the 90W version of this fixture. These lights are UL Listed and DLC Listed for rebates from your utility company.
5. LED Retrofit Kit for High Bays
A retrofit kit utilizes your existing fixture and replaces the bulb and ballast with the LED Head and the LED Driver. These retrofits can be significantly more economical than replacing the entire fixture
These retrofits come in two models, 150W and 180W, producing up to 23,400 lumens at 130 lumens/watt. Compare that to some of our competitors products that produce only 97 lumens per watt. They would need 241W to produce the 23,400 lumens. These lights are ETL listed for safety.
Wet Location? You need IP rated Lighting
Many of our warehouse and factory high bays are IP rated. IP (meaning Ingress Protection) is a rating system that determines how well a fixture can keep out dust and moisture. It is represented as IPXX, where the first digit is how well it keeps out dust and the second digit talks about how well it keeps out water. Here are the current ratings:
First Digit - Intrusion Protection
0 - No special protection
1 - Protected from a large part of the body such as a hand.
2 - Protected against fingers or other object not greater than 3.14" in length and .47" in diameter.
3 - Protected from entry by tools, wires etc. with a diameter of .09" or more.
4 - Protected against solid bodies larger than 1mm.
5 - Protected against dust that may harm equipment.
6 - Dust tight.
Second Digit - Moisture Protection
0 - No protection.
1 - Protected against condensation.
2 - Protected against water droplets deflected up to 15° from vertical
3 - Protected against spray up to 60° from vertical.
4 - Protected against water spray from all directions.
5 - Protected against low pressure water jets (all directions).
6 - Protected against string water jets and waves.
7 - Protected against temporary immersion.
8 - Protected against prolonged effects of immersion under pressure.
We have high bay LED lighting products that are rated at IP65, IP66 and IP67. How much do you need? Typically IP65 is all that is required unless you have an environment where strong pressurized water is being directly sprayed on to the fixtures.
DesignLights Consortium (DLC) Qualified High Bay LEDs
All of our LED High Bay Lighting Fixtures are UL listed or ETL listed. Be careful of anything that is only CE listed. CE is a European safety standard. All commercial LED High Bay products should be RoHS ( Restriction of Hazardous Substances) certified. This means it does not contain harmful products, such as mercury, but it also means no harmful products were used in the making of the product. And finally, there is DLC, which is a voluntary certification initiative for LED technology requiring lighting products to comply with minimum performance standards in three critical areas: distribution, color, and longevity/stress. However, for you as the consumer, the main benefit is there are typically rebates available (from your utility company) for DLC Qualified product. As well, all DLC product must be backed with a 5 year warranty.
