Reasons to Convert your High Mast Lights over to LED
1. Energy Savings
With advancements in LED Technology and higher lumens per watts configurations now available, reducing energy consumption by over 70% is not unreasonable. Coupled with controls like day light sensors and motion sensors, achieving reductions in excess of 80% is achievable. Converting over from fluorescent fixtures should see an energy savings of at least 50%. However, it is important to note that you need to pay attention to a few details.
Never buy a LED fixture based on the watts consumed, focus on lumens, Pay attention to the lumens per watt. You will consume a lot more energy at 100 lumens/watt than you will at 140 lumens per watt. MyLEDLightingGuide's products are in the higher lumens per watt configurations.
Look at the number of LEDs the fixture is using to produce the lumens. A fixture with fewer LEDs is typically driving the LEDs harder, which means life expectancy may (probably will) be shorter. More LEDs driven less hard is a better combination of efficient and longevity.
Controls and LED are a winning combination. Metal Halide, HPS and HID technologies do not work well with controls due to the long strike - re-strike time, LED's are instant on - instant off with no penalty of reducing life by turning it on and off. Dimming LEDs is simple, but make sure it is equipped with a 0-10V dimmable driver.
Paybacks can be relatively short, but is dependent on the 1+1+1 rule with LED payback - Hours of Use + Cost of Electricity + Rebates. Rebates may be the least important of the three, and high hours of use and high cost of electricity will dwarf the benefits of the rebate. 2. Reduced Maintenance
The common problem with traditional technologies like HID (Metal Halide, HPS) and Fluorescent technology is they use ballasts with relatively short life spans. LEDs use drivers that converts AC to DC power. These drivers "should" have a long life (good design is required that allows the drivers to run cool). It is not uncommon to expect a lifespan of 50,000 + hours with LED. In LED technology, the driver is the weakest link, so be wary of claims of products that will last 200,000 hours because there is an extremely high probability the driver won't last that long. Unless you can replace the driver in a 200,000 hour rated product, the product is only valuable as a marketing tool for the seller and not for you.

By switching to LEDs, you reduce the amount of maintenance time required on your new high mast lighting system. And when it comes to high mast lighting, the poles aren't easily accessible, thus it will take a much longer time for someone to replace high mast lights rather than other types of fixtures.
3. Increased Productivity
One of the specifications you need to pay attention to is CRI (color rendering index). This is essentially the quality of light that the fixture is producing. It is a scale between 0 and 100. And a general rule is that you need less quantity of light if you have better quality. LED has high CRI making the quality better than most traditional light sources. But CRI alone is not the only factor. Some traditional sources, like fluorescents also have high CRI. But because these technologies are AC powered, they "flicker", causing eye strain and headaches. LED drivers convert AC to DC, which means no flicker. So higher quality lighting with no flicker makes for a better production environment.
However, one word of caution. Extremely high CRI is not required in traditional warehouse / factory environments. It is great for retail environments where true color representation is important. We would not recommend a high CRI solution for an industrial application. It is not worth the extra cost to purchase high CRI LEDs.
