The National Geographic Society and GlobeScan designed the “Greendex™ 2008: Consumer Choice and the Environment — A Worldwide Tracking Survey.” It was a survey of environmentally responsible consumer choices. On the basis of the results of the survey, National Geographic Society and GlobeScan reported that consumers in Brazil and India had the highest scores for environmentally conscious consumption while consumers in the United States had some of the lowest scores!

The relatively environmentally friendly choices of Asians and Latin Americans may be rooted in the decades of poverty and denial. It could also be due to the inherent value system that lays stress on frugality. In many of these societies ostentatious consumption has traditionally been looked down upon.

The American society has come a long way since then. The United States Government has kick started an energy efficiency drive that is ringing in significant benefits for the environment. American consumers and corporations alike have reposed their faith in our energy efficient LED lighting products to reduce their electricity consumption and save money at the same time. Compared to incandescent bulbs that they are designed to replace, an LED light uses a fraction of the energy. A 9 watt bulb produces as much light as a 50 watt incandescent bulb.

Going Green – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

There are many things that you can do to lead a green lifestyle. The adage “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” summarizes the essence of an environmentally sustainable life style. Of these three strategies, reduction in consumption is the most effective, reusing comes second. Recycling which is fairly popular simply because it does not require individuals to make conscious aggressive cutbacks in life style comes in at the third place.
But what are the things that can be “Reduced, Reused and Recycled”- Almost everything.

Vegan lifestyle – the hidden cost of raising livestock

Research has shown that a non vegetarian diet is equivalent to driving fuel guzzling off roader. A vegan need not be an animal right activist. The health benefits of a vegan diet are so important that caring for oneself is the real driving force fueling an interest in vegan lifestyles. Cattle and swine produce many times more manure than humans do. They also consume many times more food than what they provide. Animal products have 4:1 energy inefficiency ratio and the protein conversion ratio is a horrendous 54:1. In simple terms it means that 4 pounds of energy and 54 pounds of protein are consumed by an animal to produce a pound of energy and a pound of protein!

  • A typical American consumes 200 pounds of meat every year including 90 pounds of beef. Each pound of meat requires 2,400 gallons of water and 7 pounds of grain.
  • If average US meat consumption were to fall by a mere 5%, it will be possible to feed and additional 2.5 million people every year from the grain savings alone.
  • A large hog farm can produce more manure than the city of Los Angeles!

Thoughts about Alcohol Consumption

People in the developing world consume around 2 liters of alcohol per person per year while the world record for alcohol consumption is held by Luxemburg at more than 15 liters per person per year. Obviously the amount of alcohol consumed is purely a matter of individual taste.

  • If alcohol were consumed in moderation, it could free 15 million hectares of land for farming – roughly equivalent to 50 million tons of grain that could feed 220 million people.
  • Fertilizer consumption would go down by 1.3 million tons and
  • 215,000 million liters of water would be saved in the production process alone.
  • Energy equivalent to 473,000 megawatts would be saved in the distribution of alcohol.

Note: We are not associated with any vegan or abstinence advocacy group. Our only aim is to help people make environmentally sustainable lifestyle choices.

What about energy wasting lights?

Just as a lot of resources are wasted in producing animal products and Alcohol, incandescent bulbs waste 95% of their energy as heat. It is no surprise therefore that there is a move to replace them with energy efficient LED lights.

It requires a certain amount of discipline to reduce the consumption of animal products and alcohol. Going green with LED's is much simpler. You can place a secure, online order with our “BBB” accredited business. Free shipping and discounts on bulk orders are an added attraction. Once you receive your LED light order all you need to do is plug them into electricity sockets and do your bit to help save the planet. (make sure the power to the light is always turned 'Off' before installing a LED bulb into the socket)

“Let there be light”. Bulbs tried to give us light for more than 2 centuries. But at the end of the day it has only remained only a glorified electric heater. CFLs have issues of mercury contamination and safe disposal. Mercury free LED bulbs are the best lighting choice for environmentally conscious consumers. They produce light when and where it is needed and minimizes light and greenhouse gas pollution and mercury contamination.

Energy savings with LED technology work out to around $1370.00 per year for every household! The impact of cumulative action on the nation’s energy budget and its global competitiveness can be mind boggling. India plans to save 1.5 million Giga watts of electricity in a single project using energy efficient lights.
